ENGLAND
- Less than 48 hours after the conclusion of the three-match T20i series, the first of three ODIs commenced at the Kia Oval with England looking to build on their victory at Trent Bridge on Sunday.
- Both Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes return to England white-ball duty in this first ODI after being rested across the T20i series with Bairstow expected to open with Jason Roy and Stokes slot into the middle order.
- Bowler Reece Topley’s excellent performance in the final T20i could see him rewarded with a start on the ground where he currently plays his county cricket for Surrey, whilst leg-spinner Matt Parkinson will continue to deputise for Adil Rashid.
INDIA
- India’s remarkable strength-in-depth ensures that their quality remains undiminished going into this ODI series despite fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah being afforded a rest despite playing first one of the three T20i matches.
- Virat Kohli showed signs of his class in the final T20i and a change in format to 50 overs-a-side may just be the tonic he needs to put up a big individual score with questions starting to tentatively be asked regarding his place in the team.
- Fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj could both play for India, whilst skipper Rohit Sharma will need to make a decision on whether to include either one or two left-arm spin options in Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a fascinating series with both teams boasting a significant amount of firepower with the bat, which should lead to a high-scoring encounter here at what is usually an excellent ground for batters at the Kia Oval. What is certain is that England will come out of the blocks very fast as they always do with openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, whilst India may take a more measured approach led by Rohit at the top of the order before increasing their aggression later on. With this in mind, the smart move is backing England to make the highest score after 15 overs regardless of whether they are batting first or second.
