BANGLADESH
- Bangladesh got off to a winning start in their return to ODI action after more than a year without playing this format of the game as they eased to a six-wicket win with more than 16 overs to spare.
- Mustafizur Rahman got them off to a great start removing both openers and Shakib Al Hasan produced stunning figures of 4/8 from 7.2 overs as they restricted the Windies to just 122 all out which they had no issue in knocking off.
- 21-year-old Hasan Mahmud impressed on his ODI debut taking 3/28 and after such an impressive display, he should retain his place as they will almost certainly name the same eleven for this second match.
WEST INDIES
- West Indies found the going tough in the opening ODI as after being put into bat, their inexperienced line-up could only manage 122 which proved to be nowhere near enough against the hosts.
- Their top order struggled as they were reduced to just 56/5 and they simply have to get off to a better start to give themselves a chance of competing but they will likely keep faith with the batting line-up rather than risk knocking the confidence of some of their younger players after just one game.
- Slow left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein made an impressive debut taking 3/26 from his ten overs as he relished the conditions in Dhaka although they do continue to miss Hayden Walsh Jr who remains unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19.
THE PREDICTION
Bangladesh were favoured in the opening ODI but the manner of their victory highlighted a major gulf between these two squads. The tourists have brought a highly inexperienced group of players on this tour and it showed in the first game as they looked somewhat out of their depth. With Bangladesh possessing plenty of quality and experience, they look mightily impressive on home turf too and they will be confident of racking up another win here. The West Indies will benefit from the first game and more time in these conditions, but even if they make an improvement, it will not be enough as the hosts have to be favoured yet again.
