THE TEAM NEWS
AUSTRALIA
- Australia sealed the series on Sunday as they won the toss yet again and elected to bat first before amassing an incredible 389/4 thanks to another sublime century by Steve Smith and great contributions form David Warner, Aaron Finch, Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell who all smashed quickfire fifties.
- The only negative from that game was the groin injury sustained by David Warner who joins Marcus Stoinis on the sidelines so the selectors have to decide whether to bring D’Arcy Short or Matthew Wade in at the top of the order or move Alex Carey or Marnus Labuschagne up.
- There is a good chance they will rest Pat Cummins with Sean Abbott likely to come into the line-up while they may contemplate other rotations ahead of T20 series even if they would like to seal the whitewash.
INDIA
- After another hugely disappointing defeat in the second ODI, skipper Virat Kohli admitted his side had been outplayed as they once again could not prevent Australia from amassing a huge total and they simply need to bowl and field better to give their batsmen a better chance.
- With the series lost, India will have half an eye on the upcoming T20 series but they may not make as many changes as some expect as Kohli and the selectors will be desperate to salvage some pride and build some confidence with a victory here.
- Shubman Gill, Manish Pandey and Sanju Samson all have a chance of coming into the batting order but it surely has to the bowling attack that will see some changes after being second-best to the Aussies so Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav and Thangarasu Natarajan could feature here.
THE PREDICTION
Australia have simply outplayed the tourists in the opening two one-day internationals and they will be eager to stamp their dominance on the series ahead of the T20s with a whitewash victory in Canberra. The Manuka Oval is expected to favour yet another high-scoring game that surely favours the hosts as while both batting line-ups have been excellent, the Aussie bowling attack has found it far easier coping with conditions. That said, much will depend on who wins the toss and bats first as putting a big score on the board will only serve to add pressure to the chasing team and it will be interesting to see if the roles reversed would change the outcome. Rotations are likely for both sides but there may not be as many as some analysts think. The loss of Stoinis and now Warner does weaken the hosts somewhat but so many of their batsmen are in fine form, they simply have to be favoured whether batting first or second.
