THE LOWDOWN

AUSTRALIA

  • Australia have unsurprisingly named a strong squad for this three-match ODI series as they look to bounce back following a desperately disappointing T20 World Cup campaign on home soil, which saw them knocked out at the ‘Super 12’s’ stage.
  • Bowler Pat Cummins has replaced Aaron Finch has captain, the opener having retired from ODI cricket, whilst all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will miss the series having broken his leg at a friend’s birthday party.

ENGLAND

  • Only a few days after winning the 2022 T20 World Cup, England must now change gear and focus on ODI cricket, leaving them with little time to celebrate their success as preparation for next year’s 50-over World Cup really starts to begin.
  • T20 World Cup final star Ben Stokes retired from ODI cricket earlier this year and Sam Billings is expected to slot into the middle order, whilst the series presents opportunities for opener Jason Roy and fast bowler Olly Stone.

THE PREDICTION

It’s hard to see England being able to conjure up their highest level of performance across this first ODI when taking into account the celebrations that have likely occurred following their T20 World Cup triumph on Sunday. Preparations will have been minimal and players such as Moeen Ali have already come out publicly to blast the scheduling of this series. Australia meanwhile, have a serious point to prove and would no doubt love to get one over on their old rivals. The expectation is that the hosts will put together a superior showing than that of their opponents in this first ODI and Australia are to be favoured for victory.
