THE LOWDOWN
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
- Sunrisers Hyderabad will come into the 2022 IPL a much-changed unit having lost the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Jason Holder, Rashid Khan and former captain David Warner, all overseas players who have made a big impact on SRH in the past, none more so than Warner who led them to their only IPL title in 2016.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to lead their bowling attack, whilst former RCB all-rounder Washington Sundar adds balance to the team, as does New Zealand international Glenn Phillips, should he get the nod as one of the four overseas players permitted to play.
RAJASTHAN ROYALS
- Rajasthan Royals have shed the majority of their English contingent for the 2022 IPL, releasing the likes of Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone, whilst Jofra Archer was bought by Mumbai Indians at the mega action.
- Last season Rajasthan’s bowling attack was a weak suit, but now it looks their strong suit following the signings of left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult and spin-bowler Ravichandran Ashwin, two very shrewd pickups.
THE PREDICTION
So often in recent years, Rajasthan Royals’ bowling has proven their Achilles heel with far too much of a reliance on Archer. Now, with the likes of Boult, Ashwin, Prasidh Krishna and Yuzvendra Chahal, they have a number of different bowlers capable of winning matches for them, starting here against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Question marks lie over the batting of SRH led by Kane Williamson, who will no doubt be crucial to their hopes, whilst it’s vital that West Indian Nicholas Pooran justifies the faith shown in him at the mega auction. Right now, there is too much to like about this Rajasthan bowling unit and when also taking into account the vast international experience at their disposal, the Royals have to be favoured in this contest.
