THE LOWDOWN

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore boasts a squad full of big-name superstars across the cricketing world, but still lack that illustrious first IPL title, which as you would expect, is their ultimate goal as Virat Kohli bids to cement his legacy both at the franchise and as a player in the IPL.
  • Faf du Plessis captains the side and will bat at the top of the order with Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell a key player alongside Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

MUMBAI INDIANS

  • After finishing rock-bottom of the 2022 IPL, a Mumbai Indians franchise in somewhat of a transition, will be hoping for significantly better this year, with a number of their younger players containing a year’s extra experience under their belts.
  • The five-time champions will have to do without star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah throughout the entire competition due to injury and the vastly experienced Kieron Pollard is no longer a member of the squad, so plenty will depend upon an overseas middle-order core which includes the likes of Tim David, Dewald Brevis and the newly Cameron Green to support Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav at the top of the order.

THE PREDICTION

The famous M.Chinnaswamy Stadium is expected to be rammed and raucous for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s homecoming in what should be a special occasion. It is likely to be a good time for them to play Mumbai Indians, who may need a few matches to settle into this year’s IPL and really figure out their strongest starting line-up. The absence of such a quality player in Bumrah really cannot be understated enough and it’s hard to see Mumbai Indians replicating previous title winning campaigns without him. Therefore, back RCB with home advantage in their favour, to gain victory in their first match of the 2023 IPL.
