IPL – Performance Power Rankings Week 6

With the 2022 IPL having concluded its sixth week of competition, Team TSZ has analysed both the results and performances of the ten franchises so far and ranked them from tenth to first based on who has impressed the most. TENTH – KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Although Kolkata Knight Riders did manage one win in week six, it’s been a disappointing season for them so far, losing seven of their 11 matches played, including most recently a 75-run thrashing courtesy of Lucknow Super Giants. There was an expectation that this would probably be a transitional season under captain Shreyas Iyer, but at this point we have no choice but to place them bottom of our rankings.

NINTH – MUMBAI INDIANS

Would you believe it, Mumbai Indians no longer sit at the very bottom of our power rankings! After losing their opening eight matches in a row, Rohit Sharma’s side finally found a winning formula during week six, triumphing against both Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans. Could this be the start of a patented long winning run, which they have been notorious for in the past under head coach Mahela Jayawardene? Don’t put it past them!

EIGHTH – PUNJAB KINGS

Punjab Kings drop a spot in our power rankings after winning one and losing two of their last three games. They responded well to defeat at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants by beating Gujarat Titans by 11 runs. However, Punjab couldn’t back that result up as they were beaten four days later by Rajasthan Royals, their total of 189/5 being chased down with six wickets and two balls remaining.

SEVENTH – CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

With MS Dhoni back in the captaincy saddle, Chennai Super Kings’ results have taken a distinct turn for the better. Twice in their last three matches Chennai have racked up over 200 runs batting first and went on to win both games against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals respectively, although these were sandwiched between a defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

SIXTH – SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

Safe to say it has been a week to forget for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their winning run earlier in the competition looks a dim and distant memory now, with them losing their last three games. Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and most recently Royal Challengers Bangalore have all overcome Kane Williamson’s side, who have dropped down to sixth-place in the IPL table.

FIFTH – DELHI CAPITALS

At one stage it looked like Delhi Capitals would place higher in our week six power rankings after a convincing 21-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad made up for their narrow six-run loss against high-flying Lucknow Super Giants four days earlier. However, a 91-run thrashing at the hands of Chennai Super Kings has counted against them, the Capitals having been bowled out for a miserly 117 chasing 209 to win.

FOUTH – RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Dropping down to fourth in our week six power rankings is Rajasthan Royals. Two really disappointing losses to the two lowest-placed sides currently in the 2022 IPL so far has stunted their progress, although they redeemed themselves somewhat with a hard-fought six-wicket triumph against Punjab Kings which saw them chase down 190 with just two balls remaining.

THIRD – ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s response to being beaten by Gujarat Titans has been exceptional across week six, leading to a much-deserved rise in our power rankings. Not only did they overcome an MS Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings by 13 runs, Faf du Plessis’ men also defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in dominating fashion, crushing them by 67 runs at Wankhede Stadium.

SECOND – GUJARAT TITANS

Gujarat Titans have not only lost their place at the top of the 2022 IPL table, they’ve also lost top spot in our power rankings following successive defeats. The expectation was that they’d further cement their wonderful run across the season after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets, but alas this was not the case. Losses to both Punjab Kings and lowly Mumbai Indians represent their first real setback over the course of the tournament so far.

FIRST – LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS

With four consecutive wins under their belt, Lucknow Super Giants have leapfrogged Gujarat Titans into top spot and deservedly so following their form across week six. They have recorded victories over the likes of Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and most recently a 75-run battering of Kolkata Knight Riders. Make no mistake about it, this franchise led by KL Rahul in their IPL debut, have the tools to go all the way in this competition.
