IPL – Performance Power Rankings Week 5
With the 2022 IPL having concluded its fifth week of competition, Team TSZ has analysed both the results and performances of the ten franchises so far and ranked them from tenth to first based on who has impressed the most. Be sure to bookmark the Cricket section of TSZ’s official website as we’ll be bringing out IPL Power Rankings every week assessing the best (and worst) performing sides of the competition so far.
TENTH – MUMBAI INDIANS
Week five saw Mumbai Indians fail to record their first win of the season, instead extending their losing run to eight straight matches. It’s been a nightmare year for them so far and bar a miracle, any play-offs appear to have already been extinguished.
NINTH – KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
Like Mumbai, Kolkata Knight Riders are suffering through a significant losing streak of their own, having been beaten in each of their last five games. A further two defeats in week five see them remain ninth in our power rankings.
EIGHTH – CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
Having lost to Punjab Kings by 11 runs on week five, Chennai Super Kings drop a place in our power rankings, with Punjab understandably leapfrogging them. However, with the franchise having announced the return of MS Dhoni as captain, things may be set to improve for Chennai going forward.
SEVENTH – PUNJAB KINGS
Punjab Kings began their week five fixtures with an excellent 11-run triumph over Chennai Super Kings and whilst they were beaten by Lucknow Super Giants four days later, Punjab have still done enough to go up one place here. However, they do need to try and put together a winning run to push towards those play-off spots having won four and lost five so far this season.
SIXTH – ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE
A nightmare week for Royal Challengers Bangalore see them drop a whopping three places after losing both of their matches played. Defeat by nine-wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad saw RCB bowled out for just 68 and this was backed up by a 29-run loss against Rajasthan Royals. Simply not good enough from Faf du Plessis’ side.
FIFTH – DELHI CAPITALS
Delhi Capitals bounced back strongly after being beaten by 15 runs against Rajasthan Royals, overcoming Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in a hard-fought affair. Kuldeep Yadav starred for Delhi with his leg-spin bowling and will be crucial to their plans going forward, whilst the welcome return of Mitchell Marsh and Tim Seifert should benefit them further, with Marsh playing against KKR.
FOUTH – SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
It was one win and one defeat for Sunrisers Hyderabad on week five, but what a win it was! Kane Williamson’s side bowled out Royal Challengers Bangalore for just 68 runs bowling first, before chasing their target down in eight overs for the loss of just one wicket. However, they failed to back that excellent result up, losing by five wickets to league leaders Gujarat Titans this past Wednesday in a thrilling affair.
THIRD – RAJASTHAN ROYALS
Two wins for Rajasthan Royals cemented their place at the top end of the table in this year’s IPL, not to mention our power rankings. They racked up a winning total 222/2 batting first against Delhi Capitals before comfortably beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 29 runs, bowling out their opponents for 115 chasing Rajasthan’s score of 144/8.
SECOND – LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS
Lucknow Super Giants rise up in week five, having continued their wonderful start to life as an IPL franchise. KL Rahul’s men extended Mumbai Indians’ misery first up, thrashing the bottom-placed side in this year’s tournament by 36 runs. This was then backed up by a 20-run victory over Punjab Kings following a wonderfully disciplined bowling performance.
FIRST – GUJARAT TITANS
Top spot remains in the hands of Gujarat Titans, who rack up another two victories to their tally in what has been a dream debut season for them so far. A narrow 8-run triumph over Kolkata Knight Riders was followed up by arguably their most impressive win of the competition so far, as they chased down 196 to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to end the recent winning streak of Kane Williamson’s side by scoring the winning runs from the final ball of the match.
