IPL – Performance Power Rankings Week 4

With the 2022 IPL about to conclude its fourth week of competition, Team TSZ has analysed both the results and performances of the ten franchises so far and ranked them from tenth to first based on who has impressed the most. TENTH – MUMBAI INDIANS

Well, it’s official! For the first time ever in IPL history, a franchise has lost their first seven matches played across the tournament and to make matters worse it is the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history. Two further defeats for Mumbai Indians in week four sees them remain firmly bottom of these power rankings.

NINTH – KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling was nothing short of a disaster across week four. After taking just three wickets against SRH which saw Kane Williamson’s side chase down 176 to win, KKR were beaten once again this past Thursday by Rajasthan Royals in an IPL classic. That won’t be any consolation though for Kolkata, who need to improve significantly and fast.

EIGHTH – PUNJAB KINGS

A week is a long time in the IPL. Third in our most recent power rankings, consecutive losses against Sunrisers Hyderabad and a Covid-19 ravaged Delhi Capitals respectively have seen Punjab relegated to a lowly eighth place after being placed third in the week three power rankings.

SEVENTH – CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

It had all the makings of another disappointing week for Chennai Super Kings having lost to high-flying Gujarat Titans last Sunday. However, MS Dhoni had something to say about that as the CSK and India cricketing legend smashed a four from the final ball of the game in Chennai’s crunch clash with Mumbai Indians on Thursday, which saw them home to their target of 156. Potentially a catalyst for a Super Kings winning run? We shall see.

SIXTH – DELHI CAPITALS

The Capitals deserve every credit for how they have gone about things this past week. After losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore by 16 runs, Delhi lost a number of players through positive Covid-19 tests, forcing them into quarantine which drastically affected their preparation for the match against Punjab Kings on Wednesday. Which made it a big surprise when they comprehensive defeated the Kings by nine wickets after bowling them out for just 115, an excellent performance.

FIFTH – LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS

Lucknow Super Giants remain right where they are at number five following a neutral week four from their point of view. Victory against Mumbai Indians wasn’t backed up, with the Super Giants losing to RCB by 18 runs, so it’s a case of ‘as you were’ with KL Rahul and his side.

FOUTH – SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

Kane Williamson’s Sunrisers Hyderabad have enjoyed a meteoric rise up not only the 2022 IPL league table, but also up our power rankings after extending their winning run to four games this past week. Two wins were recorded by SRH, both successful chases against Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings respectively. An impressive feat!

THIRD – ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore chalked up two more wins across week four to move level on points with IPL league stage leaders Gujarat Titans. Both victories saw RCB rack up scores of 189 and 181 batting first respectively, with the bowlers doing their job effectively in the second innings, leading Faf du Plessis’ men to success against Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants

SECOND – RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Rajasthan Royals could easily have dropped down a rank or two after playing just once compared to the likes of RCB and SRH. But what a game it was and what a win! The Royals fought out a thriller with KKR that saw two outstanding individual performances from Rajasthan’s Jos Buttler (a century with the bat) and Yuzvendra Chahal (a hat-trick and five-wicket-haul with the ball). With those two displays combined with the Royals coming out on top, they are deserving of their second spot.

FIRST – GUJARAT TITANS

Gujarat Titans remain the benchmark in our power rankings as they remain top of the pile. A three wicket win against Chennai Super Kings maintains their excellent start to life in the IPL with the Titans having now won five and lost just one of their six fixtures played so far. Even more impressive was that Gujarat triumphed over CSK without captain Hardik Pandya through injury, a feat which further justifies their number one spot here.
