IPL – Performance Power Rankings Week 3
With the 2022 IPL about to conclude its third week of competition, Team TSZ has analysed both the results and performances of the ten franchises so far and ranked them from tenth to first based on who has impressed the most. TENTH – MUMBAI INDIANS
The most successful franchise in IPL history is having a 2022 season to forget. This third week has seen played suffer defeat twice more, this time against Royal Challengers Bangalore and most recently Punjab Kings, meaning that it is now played five, lost five for Mumbai Indians and skipper Rohit Sharma.
NINTH – CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
At the fifth time of asking, Chennai Super Kings finally recorded their first victory of the 2022 IPL this past Tuesday. After losing three days previously to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ravindra Jadeja picked up his first win as CSK skipper as his side defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs in a dominant batting performance which saw them make 216/4. They will hope that this marks the start of a renaissance.
EIGHTH – DELHI CAPITALS
Despite winning their only fixture in week 3, Delhi Capitals drop a place to eighth in our power rankings. This is solely due to the performances of the franchise we have ranked seventh and not a reflection on Delhi themselves. The Capitals defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 44 runs and their record after three weeks stands at played four, won two, lost two.
SEVENTH – SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
A fantastic week for Sunrisers Hyderabad saw them open their 2022 IPL account with successive victories, hopefully a turning point for the team which has struggled for the best part of over a year when factoring in the 2021 IPL. Victory over Chennai Super Kings was followed up by an eight-wicket triumph over Gujarat Titans, one of the standout sides in the competition so far.
SIXTH – KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
Kolkata Knight Riders were only in action once in week three, but it did not end well for them as they were comprehensively beaten by 44 runs at the hands of Delhi Capitals, which has led to this big drop for them in our power rankings. After conceding 215 runs, KKR found themselves bowled out for 171 in response, but remain second-place in the overall IPL table. They’ll be looking to bounce back quickly with two fixtures across week four.
FIFTH – LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS
Like KKR, Lucknow Super Giants tasted defeat in their single IPL fixture in week four, which has seen them drop down our rankings. They loss however, was a much closer affair against Rajasthan, a thrilling contest which saw KL Rahul’s side beaten by just three runs after just failing to chase down 166 for victory, finishing on 162/8. Expect the Super Giants to bounce back next week and for our power rankings to reflect that.
FOUTH – ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE
RCB began week four brilliantly with a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, their third victory in a row this season. However, Faf du Plessis’ men couldn’t back that result up later in the week as they lost out by 23 runs to Chennai Super Kings, handing the reigning champions their first win of this year’s IPL. Still, there is plenty to be optimistic about in the RCB camp.
THIRD – PUNJAB KINGS
Punjab Kings looked on their way to victory in their first of two week three games against Gujarat Titans before Rahul Tewatia’s stunning cameo (more on that later in the article). It would have taken a lot of character to bounce back from such a harsh defeat, but Punjab managed it, triumphing over Mumbai Indians by 12 runs. It has been a positive 2022 so far for the Kings, who are well within the mix for those all-important play-offs at this early stage.
SECOND – RAJASTHAN ROYALS
Rajasthan Royals, like both RCB and Punjab Kings ended up with one win and one loss to their name across week three, however what cannot be disputed is that they remain one of the stand-out teams across this IPL season so far. A nail-biting 3-run victory over Lucknow further emphasised their potential, however they proved no match for the side who places above them in our power rankings.
FIRST – GUJARAT TITANS
A bumper three matches for Gujarat Titans in week three were as dramatic as they were rewarding. Needing 12 runs to overcome Punjab Kings, consecutive sixes from Rahul Tewatia secured one of the most memorable wins in IPL history such was the drama of those final two balls. Although Gujarat were then beaten by SRH, the Titans bounced back in style, beating highly-fancied Rajasthan by 37 runs last time. The only franchise with eight points to their name, not only do Gujarat Titans top the league table, they also top our week three power rankings.
