THE TEAM NEWS
PUNJAB KINGS
- Punjab Kings come off a second consecutive defeat and this time at the hands of the Delhi Capitals as after posting a more than competitive total of 195/4, they were unable to defend that losing by six wickets and ten balls to spare.
- The positives of that performance were in the batting department with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal getting them on the way with excellent knocks of 61 and 69 respectively but they once again could not produce a strong all-round and complete performance as their bowlers struggled to make an impact.
- After further struggles with bat and ball respectively, Nicholas Pooran and Riley Meredith may both find their positions under threat for this game if they decide to change things around with Dawid Malan, Fabian Allen and Chris Jordan all waiting in the wings to come into the side.
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
- The pressure on the Sunrisers Hyderabad is mounting by the game as they sit rock bottom of the IPL ladder after three defeats to open this edition as all three have come when chasing totals including their latest loss to the Mumbai Indians.
- The manner of the last two defeats has been hugely concerning as they have been in outstanding positions thanks to their top order but their middle and lower order remains massively fragile just as it has been for some time now.
- Manish Pandey’s position is under threat as Mujeeb Ur Rahman due to the weakness in their middle order so there could well be a place in the team for Jason Roy or Kane Williamson if the latter passes fit.
THE PREDICTION
Both of these teams are under serious pressure to turn their bad form around here and that ramps up the importance of this game. Defeat would be hugely damaging to either side but a victory would give them a massive boost. It is arguably more important for the Sunrisers as they need to avoid falling even further adrift at the bottom but they are major question marks over them right now. It is difficult to have much confidence in them given how weak they look outside of their key overseas trio. David Warner, Jonny Bairstow and Rashid Khan are playing some excellent cricket right now but that is not enough. The Punjab Kings have plenty more quality all round and more players in form, and while they have their own weaknesses, they have to be favoured to get the win here.
