THE LOWDOWN

GUJARAT TITANS

  • Gujarat Titans have been the best team throughout this season’s IPL and their first ever fixture on their home ground will be the final after topping the league stage with 10 wins, before beating Rajasthan Royals in the first qualifier.
  • Key to Gujarat’s success has been their middle order finishers with players such as Rahul Tewatia, captain Hardik Pandya and David Miller so important for them, the latter scoring three successive sixes to take the Titans home in the final over last time out against Rajasthan.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

  • Rajasthan Royals will have the opportunity to secure a first IPL title since the inaugural season of the competition all the way back in 2008 after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by seven wickets in the second qualifier.
  • Jos Buttler struck yet another century, this one an unbeaten 106 to break the back of Rajasthan’s run chase against RCB and you can’t help but feel that he holds all the cards in this final.

THE PREDICTION

Gujarat Titans will likely enter this final as narrow favourites and rightly so. They’ve been the best team across the entire tournament and this reflected by them topping the league table before overcoming Rajasthan in the first qualifier. However, despite Gujarat defeating their final opponents twice already over the course of the competition, it almost feels like it is Rajasthan Royals’ destiny to lift the trophy in 2022. The passing of 2008 Royals skipper Shane Warne, who led them to their only IPL trophy can only serve as huge motivation to the Rajasthan players to win it for the great man. They boast a side full of experienced international superstars who know what it takes to win when it matters most and the fact that Gujarat have not played for the past five days could work against them. With that in mind, seriously consider going against the grain here and back Rajasthan Royals to win a second IPL title.
