THE LOWDOWN

PERTH SCORCHERS

  • Perth Scorchers have done everything right in the defence of their BBL title and now they have just one more hurdle to overcome, having booked their place in the final following victory over Sydney Sixers in the qualifier.
  • The fact that the Scorchers have achieved this without the injured Mitchell Marsh makes the feat even more impressive, with them winning 12 of their 15 matches played across the tournament heading into the final.

BRISBANE HEAT

  • So often in a T20 league, we see a team who just sneak into the play-offs end up riding a wave of momentum all the way to the final and in this season’s men’s BBL, Brisbane Heat are that team.
  • After finishing fifth-place in the league stage, the lowest of all the qualified teams, Brisbane have since won their eliminator, knockout and now the challenger over Sydney Sixers to seal a trip to Perth and their chance to win a first men’s BBL title since the second edition of the tournament.

THE PREDICTION

This is a battle between the best team in the competition and the side with the most momentum. It remains to be seen whether Perth Scorchers having not played since Brisbane Heat’s last two victories will work in the latter’s favour. However, the Scorchers have been by far the better team across the competition and face a Heat unit without the likes of captain Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne, who have both departed to India for international duty with Australia. This damages Brisbane from a batting perspective, which could prove decisive with the expectation that they will need a big score to overcome the Scorchers whether they are setting or chasing a target.

Ultimately though, the spine of this Perth Scorchers team is the strongest in the competition and they’ve been superior to all their competition for two seasons now. They know how to get the job done in a big final and on their own ground with a sea of Scorchers fans behind them, they have to be favoured to hold their nerve and retain the men’s BBL title.
