THE TEAM NEWS

MELBOURNE RENEGADES

  • After finishing rock bottom of the table in last season’s BBL, the only way is up for Melbourne Renegades, who contain the likes of Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi and England left-arm bowler Reece Topley as overseas players.
  • The Renegades are significantly weakened within their batting department heading into this match, with Marcus Harris in the Australian Ashes squad, Nic Maddinson away with Australia A, Shaun Marsh injury and Aaron Finch also a doubt with a knee problem.

ADELAIDE STRIKERS

  • Adelaide Strikers, like the Renegades have plenty of batting worries ahead of this encounter, having lost Alex Carey, Travis Head and Matt Renshaw to international duty, so plenty likely rests on the shoulders of Jake Weatherald at the top of the order
  • However, in Rashid Khan, the Strikers boast arguably the strongest overseas bowling in the competition and Rashid’s spin will be supported well by the quicker bowling of Wes Agar and Peter Siddle.

THE PREDICTION

It’s difficult to see Melbourne Renegades making a huge improvement on last season when considering the absences of key players that they must deal with ahead of this match. Their batting does look fragile, with so much dependant on opener and Australian limited overs captain Finch, who struggled badly in last year’s BBL. Ultimately, the expectation is that a very strong and experienced Adelaide Strikers’ bowling attack should be afforded plenty of joy here against the Renegades and ultimately lead the Strikers to victory in their opening game of the tournament.
