THE LOWDOWN

MELBOURNE RENEGADES

  • Melbourne Renegades finished bottom of the ladder by a large distance in BBL|09 and they will be eager to get off to a strong start this time around as they bid to put their dismal defence of their title to bed.
  • The BBL|08 winners managed just three wins in the last edition as they surrendered their crown with a whimper and that has resulted in them making some significant changes to their squad for this competition.
  • Imran Tahir is an eye-catching signing with the South African veteran set to link with the side after Christmas and another impressive addition in Imad Wasim will also not be available until later in the competition which leaves their bowling line-up severely weakened for this clash.

PERTH SCORCHERS

  • Perth Scorchers are the most successful team in Big Bash League history with three titles to their name but they have failed to make the finals in the last two editions of the competition.
  • They narrowly missed out last time out and that has prompted them into action in the player market with international duo Jason Roy and Colin Munro set to form a potentially devastating new opening partnership.
  • The big-hitting Roy will not be available for the Scorchers’ opening three matches along with England teammate Liam Livingstone which leaves holes in the side, while Chris Jordan will also be missing from last year’s squad.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these teams underachieved in BBL|09 with Melbourne Renegades managing just three wins in defence of their title while Perth Scorchers failed to qualify for the finals. Both have made some impressive signings to try and right the wrongs of those failures but some of their key men will not be available for this opening clash. For the Renegades, they are unable to call upon two crucial wicket-takers in Imran Tahir and Imad Wasim while the Scorchers will be without blockbuster signing Jason Roy. However, the Scorchers boast more depth in their squad and they have enough talent in their batting line-up to deal with an under-strength Renegades bowling attack.
