THE LOWDOWN

ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe are making a name for themselves across this qualifier and are now just one more win away from sealing a spot at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India later this year. Their batting continues to set the standard and their latest victory against Oman saw them once again rack up a score of over 300. This time, the hosts managed 332/7 batting first and whilst Oman put in an admirable attempt to chase it down, Zimbabwe ultimately came out on top by 14 runs. With that triumph, Zimbabwe successfully maintained their 100% record over the course of the Cricket World Cup qualifier and two more points in this their toughest game yet vs Sri Lanka, completes a wonderful couple of weeks for the Chevrons.

SRI LANKA

It wasn’t looking good at one stage for Sri Lanka against Netherlands in their opening Super Six fixtures as they were reduced to 34/4 and then 96/6 batting first. Resistance from Dhananjaya de Silva saw the all-rounder score a brilliant 93, assisted by Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana in the lower order. That saw Sri Lanka at least put a competitive total on the board as they were bowled out for 213. This proved enough after an excellent all-round showing from the bowlers, who held their nerve under pressure and successfully bowled out Netherlands for 192, sealing a nail-biting 21-run victory with ten overs remaining in the Netherlands’ innings. As is the case with Zimbabwe, a win in this encounter would see Sri Lanka officially book their place at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

THE PREDICTION

Both these teams boast highly capable batting units and a high scoring contest appears to be on the cards between the two nations. They key to victory will more than likely come within the bowling and this is where Sri Lanka should take the initiative with their spin-bowlers and their potency from a wicket-taking point of view. For all of Zimbabwe’s excellent batting, their bowling perhaps doesn’t contain such cutting edge compared to their opponents, so consider backing Sri Lanka to get the better of them here.

TIP: SRI LANKA TO WIN
