THE LOWDOWN
ZIMBABWE
For Zimbabwe, the equation is fairly simple. Victory here will see them book their flight to India and a place in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. It would be the strongest message sent to the cricketing world that Zimbabwean cricket is back on the map and better than ever. The Chevrons have made full use of home advantage and been very good across the Cricket World Cup Qualifier so far. However, whilst their most recent defeat against Sri Lanka has stunted their progress ever so slightly, qualifier for the biggest tournament in world cricket is still well and truly in their hands. The bowling will need to improve though, after taking just one wicket vs Sri Lanka, who chased down their victory target of 166 with ease.
SCOTLAND
Scotland made a huge statement with how comfortably they brushed aside West Indies, keeping themselves in the race for a place in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Victory here against Zimbabwe would see them draw level with the hosts on points, but with Scotland having one more game to play in the Super Six, it would leave Cricket World Cup qualification in their hands. After bowling the Windies out for just 181, Scotland’s successful run chase was never in doubt from the second ball onwards after losing opener Christopher McBridge for a golden duck. Matthew Cross and Brandon McMullen put on 125 for the second wicket, breaking the back of the chase and just two further wickets went down as the Scots reached their 182 target with 6.3 overs remaining. McMullen shone across the entire piece with three wickets to go with his runs and he’ll likely be a crucial player over the course of this encounter.
THE PREDICTION
A tight contest should be on the cards between two teams with plenty of fight, belief and talent. The expectation is that much will depend on Zimbabwe’s much-lauded batting unit against the hugely underrated Scottish bowling attack. But this is where home advantage may come in handy with the pitch likely to be a flat one which suits the Zimbabwean batters. Add that to raucous crowd in Bulawayo getting right behind the players and this may give Zimbabwe the edge here, making them narrowly worth backing over Scotland to win and make it to the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
TIP: ZIMBABWE TO WIN
