THE LOWDOWN
ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe have put themselves in a prime position to seal a place in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup following the Super Six stage of the qualifier after having swept through the group stage with a perfect record of four wins from four matches played. The most recent of those games saw the hosts make history, racking up a mammoth 408/6 against United States before bowling them out for just 104. The margin of victory was 304 runs, the biggest in the history of ODI cricket. No doubt playing at home has proven a huge advantage for them but with an excellent mix of experience, youthful exuberance and star power, Zimbabwe are peaking at just the right time.
OMAN
Oman enters the Super Six stage already with little chance of finishing in the top two come the end of it. They sit bottom of the table having lost to both Scotland and Sri Lanka, the other teams in their group who join them in the Super Six. The defeat to Scotland was by a margin of 76 runs, whilst Sri Lanka didn’t lose any wickets chasing down Oman’s 98 all out. Zimbabwe represent another significant challenge and another heavy beating would effectively end their World Cup dream. However, Oman have shown their mettle across this qualifier already, winning important games against the likes of Ireland and UAE to reach the Super Six stage.
THE PREDICTION
Unsurprisingly, Zimbabwe come into this match as overwhelming favourites and with the batting firepower that they possess, Oman’s bowlers could be in for some serious punishment. When comparing the two teams, Zimbabwe boast significantly more experience and superior all-round quality with both bat and ball and that’s without taking into account home advantage being in their favour. Expect a Zimbabwe side in excellent form to ultimately come out on top comfortably against Oman, with any other outcome being a huge surprise.
