Sri Lanka played most recently of these two teams, having taken on West Indies on Friday, but they had already long secured their place at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, winning six matches in a row. Despite missing numerous players and being an associate nation, Netherlands have defied the odds to reach the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, sealing their spot alongside Sri Lanka by beating Scotland by a margin significant enough to leapfrog them in the Super Six table on net-run-rate. The hero of the hour was in no doubt. Young all-rounder Bas de Leede cemented his status as one of the most exciting talents in cricket with an exceptional all-round performance. After taking five wickets with the ball as Netherlands restricted Scotland to 277/9 on a good batting surface, the 23-year-old then played a starring role with the bat, smashing 123 runs from just 92 ball batting at number four to get Netherlands up to the required net-run-rate. They reached their victory target of 278 in 42.5 overs with four wickets remaining.
THE PREDICTION
Netherlands will be on a huge high and understandably so after qualifying for the big show in India. However, their motivation for this particular game may be low with their primary goal having already been achieved, although the same could be said for Sri Lanka. But across the entire qualifier, Sri Lanka have proven themselves to be the best side and that is justified by their win-loss ratio. Therefore, expect Dasun Shanaka’s side to wind up too strong for Netherlands in this final and ultimately emerge victorious.
