Scotland enjoyed a really positive group stage, which sees them enter the Super Six stage with a realistic chance to make the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Of their four matches played, the Scots won three times, overcoming Ireland, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, losing only to Sri Lanka. Their squad is very much underrated, county cricket having provided plenty of big game experience for a number of their players. They’ll be hoping to take advantage of the struggles among the West Indian camp at the moment, whilst in comparison the confidence within the Scotland camp will be sky high, as is all the momentum.
WEST INDIES
Despite having reached the Super Six stage, West Indies have left themselves with a mountain to climb if they wish to qualify for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. They play just three matches in the Super Six and realistically need to win every single one by a significant margin to give themselves a chance, with net-run-rate potentially being important. The damage was done when the Windies were beaten in astonishing fashion by Netherlands. After racking up 374/6, West Indies failed to defend that total, the match finishing a tie. Jason Holder then proceeded to ship 30 runs off the Netherlands Super Over, a total far too big for them to match. Combine that with their loss earlier in the group stage at the hands of Zimbabwe and it leaves them with virtually no room for error going forward.
THE PREDICTION
Although West Indies were losers most recently and the inquest into their failings remains very much active, you’d expect them to respond strongly here with the players no doubt desperate to prove that they are still up for the challenge. Scotland have already shown how dangerous they are in the 50-over format and this is likely to be another close game as it was when the Windies took on Netherlands. This time round though, expect West Indies to be the team which comes out on top.
