THE LOWDOWN
NETHERLANDS
Netherlands could not back up their remarkable triumph over West Indies with another upset win against Sri Lanka, although they gave Dasun Shanaka’s side a huge fright. Having been asked to bowl first, an excellent showing with the ball saw Netherlands bowl out Sri Lanka for 213, Logan van Beek picking up three wickets, backing up his heroic showing vs the Windies. Of their six bowlers utilised, five picked up at least one wicket, putting into perspective the team’s all-round performance. However, the batters were unable to get them home in the face of some high-class Sri Lankan bowling. Netherlands ended up bowled out for 192, losing by 21 runs. The defeat sees them all but eliminated in terms of reaching the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup with a significant amount of ground to make up on the current top two in the Super Six group.
OMAN
Oman now cannot finish in the top two of the Super Six table, with them currently sat rock bottom with no points to their name. To reach the Super Six stage in the first place was a good achievement, but the level of their opponents is of a higher standard than they are used to facing and that has shown on a number of occasions. Most recently, Oman were beaten by Zimbabwe, although they can take huge heart from how they performed, especially with the bat. After conceding 332 runs bowling first against the hosts, the signs didn’t look good for Oman. However, they responded strongly and at one stage were 190/3. However, the innings petered out and Oman fell short by 14 runs, finishing on 318/9. Opener Kashyap Prajapati in particular deserves huge credit for a brilliant 103 from 97 balls.
THE PREDICTION
The fact that Netherlands put themselves in a really promising position to beat Sri Lanka really showed that they can compete with anyone across the Super Six, although it has left their 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread. Unlike a number of other games, they will come into this one as the clear favourites and are expected to prove too strong for Oman, who have struggled over the course of this qualifier against some really stiff competition. Therefore, Netherlands to pick up a Super Six victory.
