THE PREDICTION
An impressive eight-wicket victory away to Glamorgan last week means Sussex have begun the season with a win and a draw at Old Trafford to assert themselves at the top of Group 3 at this very early stage. Tom Haines backed up his century against Lancashire with 87 in this match whilst the form of Aaron Thomason will also boost the side. The standout performance for this match would be the bowling of Ollie Robinson. One of the best county performers in recent years and his 9-78 to back up 4-50 in the second and first innings of this match was match-winning.
Yorkshire are also coming into this on the back of a draw and a victory. They were outplayed by Glamorgan in their opening match at Headingley for pretty much all four days. However, a comprehensive 200-run win over Kent at Canterbury last week will be a huge boost for one of the pre-season favourites for the title. Adam Lyth’s start to the season has been remarkably impressive. Scores of 52, 115*, 97 and 116 for the opening batsman are evidence of the fine form that he is in.
Despite playing their first home match of the season and beginning the campaign well, Sussex will come into this as underdogs. A five-wicket haul for David Willey to lead a bowling attack that could welcome Ben Coad back in alongside Duanne Olivier and Dominic Bess is extremely threatening - especially when you have the in-form batsman in the country and the England Test captain in your batting lineup.
