THE PREDICTION
Both these two counties began their Group 1 campaigns with draws, albeit in different circumstances. After being bowled out for 267, Nottinghamshire had been behind the eight-ball against Durham and were happy to end Day 4 having successfully batted out a draw, after finishing on 298-5 chasing 395 to win. Warwickshire meanwhile, were the only Group 1 side to take 20 wickets in the opening round of games and despite weather stoppages over the course of the match had put themselves in a situation where they required 213 in a minimum of 41 overs to win. However, in scenes typical of April cricket in England snow started to rain down on Edgbaston just a few overs into their chase and a draw was confirmed.
Nottinghamshire’s winless run in first class now extends to 28 matches and an injury to bowler Jake Ball renders him a doubt for this match, so head coach Peter Moores will no doubt be hoping to have England test bowler Stuart Broad available for squad selection. Warwickshire are boosted by the arrival of Indian international batsman Hanuma Vihari, who looks set to make his debut as the club’s short term overseas player. He should provide some more steel to a batting line-up that includes England test opener Dominic Sibley. All the ingredients are in place for an intriguing encounter, which could go either way at Trent Bridge on what is normally a good pitch. However, it’s impossible to ignore Nottinghamshire’s winless streak and the mental effect it may still hold over their players. Combine that with the potency of Warwickshire bowling attack and the visitors have the tools to win this one over four days providing their international batsman such as Sibley and Vihari set the foundation with big runs.
