THE PREDICTION
Both these two sides had a first-class campaign to forget about last season and will head into this season’s County Championship with renewed optimism. For Nottinghamshire, the target first and foremost will be to win a red ball fixture for the first time since June 2018 and with South African overseas bowler Dane Paterson likely to feature in this match, Notts will be confident that they can take the wickets to go with the runs likely to be provided by batsmen such as Joe Clarke, Ben Duckett and Billy Slater. Durham welcome all-rounder Scott Borthwick back up north following the Sunderland born academy graduate’s resigning last year. Borthwick will captain a side that won’t include overseas opening batsman Cameron Bancroft for this game. Bancroft will be replaced by New Zealand Test match batsman Will Young for April.
After finishing bottom of their Bob Willis Trophy Group last season with no wins, Durham will be hoping for better this time round. The evergreen Chris Rushworth will provide plenty of wickets in April with his accurate fast-medium bowling. However, there is still a huge worry over their batting until Bancroft’s arrival next month. Nottinghamshire, with home advantage in their favour won’t get a better chance than this to end their first-class winless streak and providing that their pace bowlers such as Jake Ball and the returning Brett Hutton can support Paterson, then the hosts may well get off to a winning start here at Trent Bridge.
