THE LOWDOWN
COLOMBO KINGS
- Colombo come into this one as the only side with two league stage matches left to play and victory in both would seal top spot but qualification for the semi-finals is already assured but their focus could be doubted following an absolute hammering from Galle in their last match.
- The Kings played all of their key men; Chandimal, Mathews, Russell, Udana etc but they were blown away by a dominant Galle and they will be fired up to bounce back to rebuild some momentum.
- They have no players unavailable and are likely to continue with the English duo of Laurie Evans and Daniel Bell-Drummond in the batting line-up as they will demand more from their batting here.
JAFFNA STALLIONS
- In contrast to Colombo, Jaffna have lost a player to injury as Dhananjaya De Silva has missed the Stallions’ last two matches and remains a doubt ahead of this one as he struggles with a muscle strain.
- Similarly to Colombo, they are also assured of qualification for the knockout phase, however, a victory in this one would put them top of the table on net run rate - at least until Dambulla face Colombo in the final league stage game of the tournament.
- Jaffna were bowled out for just 150 against a resurgent and accomplished Kandy side who were desperate for the win. Avishka Fernando’s two-ball duck will not raise concerns nor will Thisara Perera’s one. Both batsman have been in excellent form throughout the tournament but the concern will be that if they don’t perform; they are in trouble as has been the case at times.
THE PREDICTION
The stakes, in relative terms, aren’t that high in this one but there is still something to play for. To win the group is both good for morale and prestige as well as being something that will benefit them on a practical level for the supposedly easier route to the final. With that in mind, though, a care-free and therefore high-scoring matches might be on the cards; although a deteriorating surface could harm that prediction. Colombo look like they will have too much for the Stallions - especially with the loss of Dhananjaya De Silva.
