THE LOWDOWN
NORTHERN KNIGHTS
- Despite being highly unlikely to reach the knockout phase now, the Northern Knights have seen an upturn in form as they have won their last two games against the Auckland Aces and Canterbury Kings.
- Their two wins have coincided with the availability of various Blackcaps and with Ish Sodhi back for this game, they now boast eight current national team players as they have a formidable look about them.
- This Knights team now resembles one of the strongest line-ups ever assembled in the Super Smash and they will be confident of ending this campaign in style as they have two remaining group stage games left.
AUCKLAND ACES
- Auckland Aces remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the Super Smash ladder having lost six of their seven games in this edition but they did manage to win last time out against Central Stags by 17 runs.
- The key to their success lay with the batting as they managed to put 199/6 on the board batting first with Mark Chapman smashing 73 from 34 balls and Robert O’Donnell hitting 61 from 34 and that provided the platform for the victory.
- They may not possess quite as much star quality as the Knights, but the Aces do have plenty of quality in their ranks in Guptill, Phillips, Chapman, Jamieson and Somerville and they will rely on them to be at their best against this star-studded Knights team.
THE PREDICTION
It is hard to look past the Northern Knights in any game when they can field such a star-studded team like they can here with eight international players in their ranks. They are ending the group stage in style and they know their only hope of reaching the knockout phase now is to win their remaining two games heavily to have any chance on net run rate. They face an Auckland side that showed signs of life last time out as they finally managed their first win at the seventh attempt of asking in this edition. This will be a tough assignment however and the Knights have far too much all-round quality for the Aces.
