AUCKLAND ACES
- Despite losing their first six matches of this Super Smash campaign, the Auckland Aces are playing with pride to close the tournament out as they have won two of their last three games now.
- Their performance last time out against the Otago Volts was their most complete of the tournament so far having batted well to put 183/7 on the board and then bowling the Volts out for just 80 in an impressive display led by Kyle Jamieson.
- They have named an unchanged squad for this final game against the Firebirds and they will be looking to go out in style and continue their good form with Mark Chapman, skipper Robert O’Donnell and Kyle Jamieson in excellent form.
WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS
- Wellington Firebirds have been comfortably the best teams in the group stage having won eight of their nine matches and they will be eager to close out with another victory to maintain their momentum heading into the knockout phase.
- The Firebirds opened the 2020/21 Super Smash against the Aces in the first game of the tournament and have not looked back since that win and with openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway in great form, they will be confident of going all the way this year.
- They have named star all-rounder Jimmy Neesham in their squad for this game as he has recovered from the surgery on a dislocated finger three weeks ago so his return will hand them a major boost.
THE PREDICTION
The final game of the group stage sees the dominant Wellington Firebirds meet the Auckland Aces and this could well be a close-fought game. The Aces are playing the best they have played all tournament right now and they will be motivated to prove they can challenge what have been the best side in the tournament so far. The Firebirds will be motivated to maintain this momentum they have ahead of the knockout phase but any sign of complacency or easing off the gas will play into the Aces’ hands. Ultimately, the Firebirds should win if they approach this game in the correct manner and play hard.
