Corentin Moutet recovered from a slow start to beat Reilly Opelka and get his Paris Masters campaign up and running. The Frenchman was broken in his first service game and quickly went 3-0 down before losing the first set. The second set was close, with Moutet breaking for the first time in the 11th game and levelling the match up. Opelka faded in the third as Moutet sealed a 3-6 7-6 6-1 in front of a passionate home crowd.
He goes up against Alexander Bublik in round two. The Kazakhstani defeated Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. He fired 13 aces and 32 winners as he won 6-4 6-3 after one hour and 14 minutes. He now has three wins from his last four matches, after also making the quarter-finals in Vienna last week.
This is the first ATP match between the pair, but Bublik has won all three of their Challenger matches. One of those was as recent as March, with Bublik coming from a set down to win in Phoenix. Both players have markedly improved since then and this could be a very compelling encounter between two entertainers in the men’s game. Bublik’s serving power and past success gives him the edge.
