Corentin Moutet booked his place in the semi-finals of the Almaty Open with a straight sets win over Jan-Lennard Struff. The first set was straight-forward enough, but Moutet went a break down in the second and had to fight back as he won 6-4 7-5. The Frenchman saved 15 break point opportunities on his serve but will need to increase his level overall if he is to win that elusive maiden title on the ATP Tour.
He will face Alex Michelsen after he defeated Shintaro Mochizuki in three sets. Michelsen lost the second set and looked in danger of being knocked out as the Japanese broke in the decider, but the world number 36 responded brilliantly by breaking Mochizuki’s serve on three successive occasions to win 6-3 3-6 6-2.
Moutet leads the head-to-head 2-1 but Michelsen is 1-0 up on hard courts. They have already played twice this season, with Moutet winning their semi-final match in Mallorca while Michelsen earned a win of his own in the second-round of the Cincinnati Open. This is likely to be a tight match, but Moutet has enjoyed the better season and will be desperate to reach his second final of the season as he hunts for a first title.
