Coco Gauff knows all about the quality and dynamism of the talented Victoria Mboko. These two players locked horns in Rome earlier this year with Mboko taking the first set, before Gauff came roaring back and overwhelmed the Canadian, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. However, The American was well aware how hard she’d been pushed and was sure to commend Mboko at the net.
Fast forward to August and the pair are set to collide once again. You could argue that Mboko is an even better player compared to back then with more experience under her belt and wins in high pressure environments, such as when the Canadian secured her first main draw Grand Slam victory at the French Open.
But Gauff remains the gold standard across women’s tennis and is formidable on the hard court. Having already played two three-set matches, the 21-year-old former US Open champion has proven her resilience at the Canadian Open this year, coming through on both occasions and will be expected to do so again here. But Mboko is playing with such confidence that it would be no surprise to see her become the latest player to take a set from Gauff in Montreal.
