Coco Gauff vs Jasmine Paolini prediction

Jasmine Paolini is tantalisingly close to becoming the first Italian woman to lift the Rome title since 1985. 

The sixth seed could yet emulate Raffaella Reggi’s feat 40 years ago after hitting back from a deficit in the first set to prevail 7-5 6-1 in her last four clash against American Peyton Stearns. 

Paolini, who would rise to fourth in the world with a victory in the final, will now face Coco Gauff in a Saturday showdown for the trophy. 

Gauff came through an epic tussle to edge Qinwen Zheng 7-6 4-6 7-6 in a semi-final battle lasting over three and a half hours. 

The American fourth seed leads the head-to-head with Paolini 2-1 but lost their only showdown on clay 6-4 6-3 in Stuttgart last month.

Gauff has since won 10 of her last 11 matches and her improved form and sheer resilience will make her a tough nut to crack, particularly as she looks to avoid back-to-back defeats in WTA 1000 finals. 

Paolini will again call upon the Roman home support to inspire her to victory and although she will be a slight underdog, the value may be in the sixth seed securing a famous victory in her homeland or at least taking it to the wire.
