Coco Gauff vs Elina Svitolina prediction

Coco Gauff dropped her second set of the tournament but still continued her unbeaten run against Karolina Muchova as she advanced to the last eight of the Australian Open. Gauff started strongly, winning the first five games on her way to taking the first set. However, she lost serve in consecutive service games in the middle of the second set as Muchova levelled the match. The American broke to go 3-1 up in the decider and crucially saved a break point in the seventh game to win 6-1 3-6 6-3. 

She faces Elina Svitolina next. The Ukrainian made her fourth quarter-final in Melbourne after an impressive straight sets win over Mirra Andreeva. She controlled the first set and despite a slow start in the second, regrouped to win 6-2 6-4 after one hour and 23 minutes. 

Gauff leads the head-to-head 2-1. Svitolina won their first meeting at this event five years ago, defeating a 16-year-old Gauff in the second-round comfortably. However, Gauff has won their last two matches. 

Svitolina’s consistency will make her a threat to Gauff, but the two-time Grand Slam champion’s superior serve and athleticism does give her the edge.
