Clara Tauson suffered an early exit at the Washington Open last week as she was defeated by Elisabetta Cocciaretto, despite winning the first set. That would have been a disappointment for the Dane after her run to the semi-finals at the Hellenic Championships, her second of the campaign. The Dane struggled with injury earlier in the campaign, and her current live ranking has dropped to 47 in the world.
She faces Nikola Bartunkova in round two after receiving a bye. The Czech advanced after a straight sets win over 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu. The 20-year-old was 5-2 down in the first set but reeled off five games in a row to dramatically take the lead. She broke in the 10th game of the second to seal a 7-5 6-4 win.
Tauson should be able to remain competitive if her weapons are firing, but Bartunkova is continuing to improve on the tour, and could trouble her opponent if the rallies are extended.
