Christopher O’Connell earned his first ATP win of the season after getting past Valentin Royer in three sets. The Australian took the first set and looked to be in complete control as he broke to go 3-2 up in the second. However, Royer broke back in the very next service game and did so again to level the match. More drama followed as O’Connell was broken when serving for the match in the decider, but he held his nerve in the tiebreak to win 6-4 4-6 7-6 (4).

He goes up against Cameron Norrie. The former British number one got his campaign up and running with a straight sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut. Norrie served for the first set on two occasions, with Bautista Agut breaking back and managing to force a tiebreak. Norrie still went in front and raced clear in the second to win 7-6 (1) 6-1.

He also leads the head-to-head in this one, beating O’Connell on one previous occasion in straight sets at the Italian Open last year. He will be expected to come through in similar fashion here.
