Casper Ruud kept his hopes of a maiden Grand Slam title alive as he dramatically came from two sets down to beat Tommy Paul. Ruud, who has made the final of Roland Garros in 2022 and 2023, saved two match points in the fourth set as he staged a magnificent fightback to win 4-6 6-7 (4) 6-4 7-6 (5) 7-5 after four hours and 43 minutes. Ruud also required five sets to beat Roman Safiullin in his first-round match.
He takes on Joao Fonseca, as the Brazilian claimed the biggest win of his young career so far after he defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in a five set epic. Fonseca became just the second player after Jurgen Melzer to beat Djokovic from two sets to love down. The teenager started slowly but soon began to produce his best level as he won 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5.
Both of these players have already expended considerable energy to reach this stage of the tournament, and fitness is likely to play its part. Fonseca can overwhelm with his heavy hitting, especially on the forehand side, but if Ruud is able to defend well and extend the rallies, he may just have the edge.
