Casper Ruud found form towards the end of the clay court season, as he reached the final of the Italian Open, losing to world number one Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Ruud was seen as one of the favourites for the title at Roland Garros after Sinner’s shock exit in the second-round, and he kept his hopes alive with a dramatic five set win over Tommy Paul in round three, which saw the Norwegian save match points. However, his run would come to an end at the round-of-16 stage as he lost in four sets to an inspired Joao Fonseca. Ruud’s Wimbledon record does not make for pretty reading, as he has failed to get beyond the second-round stage since making his debut in 2019.
He will face 2021 semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz in the first-round. The Pole lost in the opening round of the Libema Open to Marton Fucsovics despite taking the first set. He fared better in Halle as he stormed past Andrey Rublev in the first-round, but he was unable to generate further momentum after a loss to Daniel Altmaier.
Ruud leads the head-to-head 3-1, but this is their first meeting on grass. The former world number two is vulnerable on this surface, and if Hurkacz can serve well, he has a real chance of victory.
