Casper Ruud overcame a huge fitness scare in the first-round of the French Open as he beat Roman Safiullin in five sets. The two-time Roland Garros finalist looked to be cruising to victory as he served for the match and had five match points in the third set. However, he began to suffer from heatstroke and went on to lose 11 games in a row as Safiullin threatened one of the upsets of the round. The Norwegian seemed to recover physically in the decider and won 6-2 7-6 (5) 5-7 0-6 6-2 after three hours and 56 minutes.
He now takes on Hamad Medjedovic. The Serb beat Yannick Hanfmann in four sets. Medjedovic controlled the first two sets and despite a slight wobble in the third, he broke Hanfmann in the 10th game of the fourth to claim a 6-3 6-4 6-7 (1) 6-4 victory.
Ruud leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight-forward win over Medjedovic at Monte-Carlo last year. The Serb has already shown how dangerous he can be during this clay court season, with a run to the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open backed up by a round-of-16 appearance in Rome. This will be no easy task for Ruud, who was pushed to the limit in his opening round.
