Caroline Dolehide made it through to the second round with a fine 6-4 6-1 victory over Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The match was closer than the scoreline suggested, with Cocciaretto earning ten break points but only managing to convert two, as the American held her nerve at the most pressured moments of the encounter.
She now faces this year’s Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the next round. Keys has struggled to maintain the level which saw her win her first major title, though still managed to make the semi-finals at Indian Wells before Aryna Sabalenka exacted revenge for her final loss in Melbourne with a crushing 6-0 6-1 win.
She struggled in Miami and was on the end of a surprising straight-sets loss in the second round to Alexandra Eala and will want to get off to a winning start as she transitions to clay courts for the first time this season.
Keys found success on the surface last year with a fine WTA 500 win in Strasbourg, where she beat Danielle Collins in the final, and we believe she will get her clay court campaign off to a winning start here.
