Carlos Taberner produced the shock of the tournament as he took down reigning champion Francisco Cerundolo.
The Spaniard hit back to topple the top seed 6-7 6-4 7-5 and reach the last eight courtesy of arguably the best win of his career.
The world number 111 now meets Jesper de Jong, who also produced a mini surprise with a 6-3 6-4 success over fifth seed Mariano Navone.
This will be their first clash at tour-level, but Taberner has won two previous matches at a lower tier on clay, including a 7-6 4-6 6-2 victory in the Murcia final earlier this year.
De Jong is in fine form at the moment but Taberner’s confidence will be sky high after taking down the world number 19.
It may well be a tight affair with another deciding set on the cards.
