Carlos Alcaraz won his first group stage match at the ATP Finals for the first time in his career as he beat Alex De Minaur in straight sets. The first set wasn’t completely straight-forward, as the Spaniard was pegged back after building a 4-1 lead, though he still squeezed past in the tiebreak. He broke the De Minaur serve on three occasions in the second to win 7-6 (5) 6-2. He needs to win two more matches at the event to end the season as world number one.
He faces Taylor Fritz next. The American also got off to a winning start in Turin as he beat Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. Musetti had only just competed in the Hellenic Championship final in Athens two days prior and was not at his best, with Fritz winning 6-3 6-4 without dropping serve.
The head-to-head is 4-1 in favour of Alcaraz. Their last match was in the final of the Japan Open at the end of September, with Alcaraz winning in straight sets. Fritz fares well at this event, having made the final last year, and the faster conditions help to utilise his strong serve and powerful groundstrokes. Alcaraz will need to iron out some of the errors from his first match if he is to get the job done.
