Carlos Alcaraz overcame a wobble to see off Alex Michelsen in Tokyo.

The Spaniard raced clear in a decider after being pushed hard for long spells and was relieved to defeat the American 7-6 4-6 6-1.

The top seed and defending champion will now take on Matteo Arnaldi after the Italian disappointed the home supporters by beating Rei Sakomoto 2-6 6-4 6-4.

This will be a third meeting with Alcaraz leading 2-0 in the head-to-head.

The seven-time Major winner lamented lack of time for adjustments to his game heading into his opening match and should have adapted now to ensure this clash is more straight-forward.
