Carlos Alcaraz was once again in defiant mood as he booked a spot in the last four in Tokyo.

The Spaniard came from 5-3 down in the opener and saved a set point before progressing when Denis Shapovalov retired with the score at 7-6 2-1 in the reigning champion’s favour. 

The top seed will now face his compatriot Jaume Munar for the fourth time after the world number 64 reached the eighth Tour ATP semi-final of his career with a 6-4 6-2 triumph over Kyrian Jacquet.

Alcaraz leads the qualifier 3-1 in the match-up and has won the previous three encounters.

This will be a maiden tussle on a hardcourt, but Munar has caused trouble in the match-up previously and Carlitos is still grinding out some sets at present, which is enough to suggest at least part of this semi-final could be highly competitive. 

Alcaraz will be a huge favourite so looking at the number of games may be a way to improve odds and a potential pay-out.
