Carlos Alcaraz defeated Laslo Djere 6-2 6-4 in blustery conditions to make the quarter-finals as he continues his quest for a third Barcelona Open title. The Spaniard did not have everything his own way, going 4-2 down in the second set but he reeled off four straight games as he closed out his victory efficiently.
Alex de Minaur has enjoyed a really impressive clay court season so far and thrashed Jacob Fearnley 6-1 6-2 in just 62 minutes to set up an exciting quarter-final with Alcaraz. The Australian lost just three points on his serve during the whole match. He now becomes the third player born in 1999 or later to reach a 50th tour-level quarter-final.
Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 3-0 and won their only match on clay so far, which was at the semi-final stage of this event three years ago. The four-time Grand Slam champion edged a tight contest 6-7 7-6 6-4. We think he will be tested by De Minaur once again, but should prevail once more.
