Brandon Nakashima advanced to the semi-finals of the Washington Open as he beat defending champion Alex de Minaur in straight sets. Nakashima had defeated De Minaur at Queen’s Club in June, and he repeated the feat with a 7-6 (5) 6-4 win. The American crucially saved numerous break points at the start of the second set as De Minaur threatened a comeback, but Nakashima can now look forward to a fourth semi-final of the season.
He will go up against Taylor Fritz next after the 2024 US Open finalist squeezed past Alex Michelsen. The match went to a deciding set tiebreak, with Fritz saving a match point on his way to a 6-1 3-6 7-6 (6) victory after two hours and 18 minutes. He saved eight out of 10 break points in total.
The head-to-head is 3-1 in favour of Fritz, but 1-1 on outdoor hard court. They played earlier this year in Dallas, with the world number 10 winning in straight sets. Nakashima has been performing well in recent weeks, but Fritz remains the favourite to come out on top.
