Brandon Nakashima began the season in promising fashion, as he got through to his first final since 2022 at the Brisbane International. The American won four matches in a row without dropping a set, before losing to former world number one Daniil Medvedev. He was unable to continue that momentum in Melbourne as he lost in the first-round to Botic van de Zandschulp.
Mattia Bellucci was also a first-round casualty at the Australian Open after a heavy defeat to Casper Ruud. The Italian then dropped down to the Challenger Tour in Manama and won three matches on his way to the semi-finals, before a tight loss to Kyrian Jacquet in three sets.
Nakashima all-round game and better record gives him the edge here, though Bellucci can take encouragement from his strong tournament indoors at the Rotterdam Open last year, which saw him make the semi-finals after wins over Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
