Brandon Nakashima came from two sets to one down to squeeze past Jesper de Jong in the first-round. The American was close to a surprise loss but did just enough in the deciding set tiebreak to win 6-2 6-7 2-6 6-2 7-6. Despite not being at his best, Nakashima showcased his grit and composure under pressure to get the job done.
Jerome Kym impressed on his Grand Slam main-draw debut as he upset Ethan Quinn 6-3 6-2 3-6 7-5. The qualifier responded well to losing the third set and will be raring to go against another American in the second-round.
Nakashima did reach the fourth-round here last year, and does have far more pedigree on hard courts, even if his first-round performance was not the most inspiring. Kym lacks the same experience but now has four wins on the spin, including the qualifying stages.
The American’s improved serve and controlled ball striking should break through Kym’s defences the longer the match goes on, with Nakashima a strong favourite to make round three.
