Brandon Nakashima continued his exceptional form during the North American hard court swing as he reached a third semi-final in succession after defeating Taylor Fritz. Nakashima, who advanced to his first Masters 1000 final in Montreal earlier this month, lost to Fritz in the last four of the Washington Open but exacted revenge as he won 7-6 (9) 4-6 6-3. Nakashima reeled off the final four games to clinch victory.
He will now face fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe. The 28-year-old produced another impressive display to beat Lorenzo Musetti. Tiafoe was unable to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second despite having a match point, but he still went on to win 7-6 (2) 7-5 after two hours and 17 minutes. He has dropped just one set on his way to the final four.
He also dominates the head-to-head as he leads 6-1 against Nakashima. They last faced each other at the semi-final stage of the Mexican Open, with Tiafoe coming from a set down to win, though Nakashima did serve for the match. Given his impressive run over the past month, this looks set to be another closely fought encounter.
