In a hard-fought opening round clash with 2014 US Open winner Marin Cilic, Brandon Nakashima managed to win 7-6, 7-6 to progress into the second round. The number seven seed for the tournament, Nakashima was runner up at the Brisbane International last month before a tough run of it since then.
Coleman Wong eased past Yoshihito Nishioka and Tristan Schoolkate to set up a first round clash with world number 45 Nuno Borges. Wong defeated the Portuguese in three sets and is backing up what has been a strong start to the year, which began with a quarter-final run at the Hong Kong Open.
Despite the fact that Wong has been putting in some good results thus far, Nakashima remains the heavy favourite but it may not be straightforward for the American.
