Despte having never reached a Masters quarter-final, Brandon Nakashima broke new ground at the Canadian Open as he advanced to his first final in the format. The American got past Rafael Jodar in the last four, but he was unable to win the title after a straight sets loss to Ben Shelton. Nakashima is still searching for his first tour-level title since 2022, but he is now up to his career best ranking of 22 in the world.
He faces Aleksandar Kovacevic in his opening match at the Cincinnati Open. Kovacevic produced a battling display as he came from a set down to beat Karen Khachanov in the first-round. The match went all the way to a deciding set tiebreak, with the 27-year-old winning 5-7 6-3 7-6 (2).
They faced each other for the first time at the semi-final stage of this year’s Brisbane International, with Nakashima winning in straight sets. He will take a lot of confidence from how he performed in Montreal, as he seeks another deep run at a Masters event.
