Home hope Brandon Holt is featuring in the main draw in Houston for the first time having lost in qualifying in the past two years.
The 26-year-old sits 161 places above his opponent Corentin Denolly, but the Frenchman plays more regularly on clay and picked up an eye-catching 6-4 5-7 7-6 win over compatriot Adrian Mannarino in his last match in qualifying.
Denolly also saw off James Trotter in qualifying and won one of three matches on the dirt in a couple of Kigali Challengers prior to arriving in Houston.
Holt is also a regular on the Challenger circuit but more recently came through qualifying in Miami before losing to Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round.
The American has a 2-2 record at the tournament and a 0-1 match-up against left-handers, but we feel his greater pedigree at a higher level in Challengers and the ATP Tour, as well as the backing of the crowd, will help him through.
